Rename Windows Server 2008/2003 Domain Controller Name

To rename a DC with the name from DC1-SERVER in the VMS.COM domain to DC2-SERVER follow the next steps:

  • Open Command Prompt and type:
  • This command will update the service principal name (SPN) attributes in Active Directory for this computer account, and register DNS resource records for the new computer name.
  • Check the computer account updates and DNS registrations successfully, then type:
  • NETDOM computername DC1-SERVER.VMS.COM /makeprimary:DC2-SERVER.VMS.COM
  • Restart the computer.
  • In the command prompt, type:
  • NETDOM computername DC2-SERVER.VMS.COM /remove:DC1-SERVER.VMS.COM
  • Make sure that the changes have successfully been replicated to all the DCs.

Raising Windows Server 2008 Active Directory Forest Functional Levels

  • Log on the Primary Domain Controller of the domain with domain administrator credentials.
  • Open Active Directory Users and Computers by clicking Start > All Programs > Administrative Tools, and then click Active Directory Users and Computers.
  • Right-click the domain node and then click Raise Domain Functional Level.
  • Under Select an available domain functional level,
  • Click Windows Server 2003, and then click Raise to raise the domain functional level to Windows Server 2003.
  • Click Windows Server 2008, and then click Raise to raise the domain functional level to Windows Server 2008.
  •  click OK.
  • After the acknowledgement message, click OK.
  • Now you have Done, but you can not degrade the Functional Level after you upgrade it.
